OCEAN 503 WELCOME to the website of the diverse musical group known as OCEAN 503! This band plays a variety of Funk, R & B, Blues, Reggae and Jazz. Sometimes all in one day! And – it’s always live! As musicians our performance is world class. Come see what we offer and call us for your next event.
OCEAN 503 was formed in 1997 by renowned bassist Me’Gale Roberts, and keyboardist Wayne Henderson, who since has moved on. The band is based in Portland, Oregon, and performs in all the popular local venues such as Clyde’s Prime Rib, Red Lion Inns, Portsmouth Pizza, The Candlelight Bar and Grill, the Gemini Bar and Grill, etc., also the Legend’s Lounge at Spirit Mountain Casino, Wild Horse Casino, New Phoenix Casino in Washington, and in Lincoln City.
In addition to these the band also performs in popular venues in cities such as Seattle, Pendleton, Spokane, Tri-Cities, etc., coastal resorts, and festivals like Cinco DeMayo, Good N’ the Hood, Oregon Blues Festival, seasonal, corporate and local functions, weddings and private parties.
The band is lead by Me’gale Roberts, who has been thumping and plucking the bass since 1964 and also kicks a funky Little Phatty Mini Moog. In his many years of being a professional musician he performed with such greats as Donnie Hathaway and Albert King.
Me’Gale’s love for and extensive understanding of music keeps the band to it’s charge and always moving forward full force with recognizable and memorable music.
Keeping the backbeat and driving the music is Jeff Ward, who is an original member of OCEAN 503. He has drummed his way around the world with Obo Addy, and has backed up mostly all of the R & B artists in the Northwest. He combines his dazzling beats with powerful vocals.
Master keyboardist Brian Ward joined the band in 1999. He spent time on the road with Curtis Salgado, and worked with Patrick Lamb, as well as other jazz artists. He keeps the music flowing with his skills and synchronization of multiple keyboards tinted with a strong gospel flavor.
James Nikolas joined the band in early 2008. He is an accomplished player who brings that clear vibrant feel and pace we look for in a guitar player. Because he performed so great on such short notice, he was given his nick name “Big Game James” for his clutch arrival.
Helping to front the band is scintillating vocalist Ms. Sylvia. She is a ball of energy and can dance as well as charm the crowds with her silky voice. Ms. Silvia is a virtual new comer to the live music world, though you wouldn’t know that when you hear her rock those old school cuts; however she has extensive experience singing background with local groups as well as gospel.
